How to Immigrate to Mexico as a Canadian Student

Congratulations! You're about to embark on an exciting journey as you prepare to immigrate to Mexico as a student from Canada. Whether you seek new adventures, pursuing educational opportunities, or simply looking for a change of scenery, moving to Mexico can be a fulfilling and enriching experience. However, navigating the immigration process can seem daunting at first. But fear not, because I've got you covered with this comprehensive step-by-step guide to help you smoothly transition to your new life in Mexico.

*I am not an immigration lawyer, this information is based on first-hand experience and continued investigation. Please consult official sites to ensure complete compliance with immigration law.*

Step 1: Research and Plan Your Move

Before you dive into the immigration process, take the time to research and plan your move carefully. Understand the visa requirements for students moving to Mexico, familiarize yourself with the necessary documents, and set a timeline for your relocation. Planning will help you stay organized and avoid any last-minute stress.

Step 2: Gather Essential Documents

To ensure a smooth immigration process, make sure you have all the necessary documents in order. These documents may include your passport, visa application form, acceptance letter from a Mexican school, proof of financial stability, and any other required paperwork from your home and host university. Having all your documents prepared and organized will streamline the immigration process. You can see the list of required documents here.

Step 3: Obtain the Right Visa

As a student from Canada, you will typically require a student visa to study in Mexico. If you stay for LESS than 180 days, you will not need a visa, just the FMM form provided upon entering the country or you can fill it out in advance here.

If you will be staying for 180 days or more you will need to "apply" for a visa at a Mexican embassy or consulate in Canada IN PERSON.

To "apply" in person you must first make an appointment via their free system MyConsulate: 1 (424) 309 0009 or  https://citas.sre.gob.mx.

Once the appointment is made you must show up in person to "apply" via interview and provide all the required documents, such as proof of enrollment in a Mexican educational institution, financial statements, the filled-out visa application form and a valid passport. Make sure to submit your application well in advance to allow for processing time.

Step 4: Congrats!- Your Visa was Approved, Time to Prepare for Your Arrival

As you get ready to move to Mexico, start preparing for your arrival in advance. Research your destination city, arrange for accommodation, and familiarize yourself with local customs and culture. Consider learning some basic Spanish phrases to help you communicate effectively once you arrive (check out my guide on Spanish Basics here). Being prepared will make your transition to Mexico much easier and more enjoyable.

Step 5: You've Arrived, Now What?

Once your temporary student visa is approved and you have landed in Mexico you have 30 days to convert your visa to a Temporary Resident Card. This is a critical step and do not delay changing the visa for the Temporary Resident Card.

This process is done through the National Migration Institute (or INM in Spanish). Essentially you are exchanging the visa issued in your passport for a physical card that you can (and must) carry in your wallet at all times. You can see the list of required documents for this step here. This part of the process is challenging and that is why I highly recommend finishing it as soon as possible.

When collecting your documents you must fill out the following forms:

  1. Fill out the application: Issuance of Immigration Document by Exchange. This government site provides more information on exchanging migratory documents.

  2. Fill out the basic form

Once these forms are complete and the other documents are in order there are two ways to exchange your migratory document;

  1. Make an Appointment Online in the Service Portal (This was not an option when I went but I haven't heard great things about it) OR;

  2. Go in Person

The INM is located at:

Google Maps capture of where the National Migration Institute is located
Front of the National Immigration Institute in Mexico City

It is important to note that phones are PROHIBITED and staff at the INM primarily ONLY speak Spanish (hence why learning some Spanish before you leave is so important). As of February 2023, masks were still mandatory.

Now here's the kicker- if you go in person DO NOT abide by their 9 am open time. The way this works is you go early (I mean be there at 5 am early) and get in line at the Platón St. side of the building (in the Google map capture the street immediately to the left) with everyone else. You have to get there that early because if you wait for later it is more than likely that the appointment times for that day will be gone.

You will wait here until 7 am or so when an officer will come out and start going down the line, physically writing an appointment time on your document. Once you have a written time on one of your documents you are free to leave until 20 minutes before your appointment time.

Come back to that same spot 20 minutes before your appointment and an officer will call your name. From here you will enter the building and go to a waiting room. A second officer will call your name and will examine your documents. If all is in order you will pay the fee and be taken to the second floor where you will wait in a second waiting room.

From here you must remove all facial and ear piercings, glasses and your hair must be pulled back. The officer will call your name to take a driver's license-style photo which will be printed on your new Temporary Resident Card and given to you in approximately 20 minutes.

Congrats, you've done it! You have completed the hardest part of the process!

Step 6: Settle In and Embrace the Experience

Once you've successfully immigrated to Mexico and settled into your new life as a student, take the time to embrace the experience fully. Explore your surroundings, make new friends, and immerse yourself in the rich culture and traditions of Mexico. Studying abroad is a unique opportunity to broaden your horizons and gain a new perspective on the world.
